About Patricia Fennell

Patricia A. Fennell, MSW, LCSW-R, is an expert on chronic illness, focusing on how the experience of chronic syndromes and trauma influence the psychological, social and physical experience of the patient and the family. She developed, researched and validated the Fennell Four-Phase Model (FFPM) for understanding and treating chronic medical and mental health conditions, trauma, disability and the effects of crime.

Her clinical practice, Albany Health Management Associates, Inc., provides therapy, counseling and case management to individuals with chronic conditions, as well as their families and close friends, to help them accept and integrate the changes that accompany long-term illness into their lives. Her research on FFPM and the Fennell Four-Phase Treatment (FFPT™) model has shown that the experience of having a chronic syndrome, such as chronic pain, fatigue, autoimmune disease, cancer, depression and the aftermath of violence, often results in emotional and physical crisis, which can lead to additional symptoms and hinders the opportunity for recovery.

Patricia is frequently invited to speak about chronic illness, trauma and the Fennell Four-Phase Model for professional medical and criminal justice meetings, patients' organizations and the media. She also offers her expertise as a consultant and trainer to corporations, healthcare organizations, government agencies and other institutions. She also lectures often with David Kaczynski, brother of convicted Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, on issues related to the criminal justice system, particularly the critical need to address trauma that results from crime and punishment.

She has authored three books on chronic illness: The Chronic Illness Workbook: Strategies and Solutions for Taking Back Your Life; Managing Chronic Illness Using the Four-Phase Treatment Approach; and The Handbook of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She has also written numerous scholarly and lay press articles, including the chapter on Chronic Illness for the Encyclopedia of Social Work.

Patricia has served on advisory boards for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the American Pain Society; a Fortune 150 company; the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; the International Association for CFS/ME; the National Fibromyalgia Association; FibroAware; and the Fibromyalgia Support Group for Surrey and Sussex, U.K.

She received her master's degree in social work from the State University of New York at Albany and completed one year of doctoral training at the university. She received her bachelor of arts in sociology from the College of St. Rose, also in Albany, N.Y. She has been CEO of Albany Health Management Associates since 1989.

She is also a jazz vocalist in The Patricia Dalton Trio, which released its first CD in 2009.
